Although visible and unpleasant, melasma is primarily an aesthetic issue that can be resolved. The expert team at the Lasàm Clinic, led by Dr. Milena Stojanović, MD will efficiently remove melasma and help you keep it under control in the long term.
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation, a chronic skin condition that typically manifests on the face as larger, irregularly shaped dark patches ranging from light to dark brown. In 90% of cases, melasma occurs in women, most commonly during pregnancy, while only 10% of patients are men. During summer and sun exposure, its condition worsens, causing melasma to darken.
Causes of Melasma
One of the main causes of melasma is hormonal changes, which is why it often occurs in pregnant women. Amid hormonal imbalance, melasma can also develop during menopause or while taking contraceptive pills.
Exposure to UV rays is also a trigger for melasma formation because sunlight stimulates melanocyte production, particularly affecting individuals with darker skin who are simultaneously taking contraceptive pills.
In addition to genetic predisposition, melasma can occur due to the natural aging process of the skin or the use of certain medications in the treatment of chronic diseases or antibiotics.
Treatment for Melasma
• Laser Treatments (Q-switch)
• IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
• Chemical peels
Can Melasma Be Permanently Removed?
After removing existing spots, typically requiring 2 to 3 treatments spaced several weeks apart, it's essential for the patient to adhere to home care with products that prevent melasma reappearance, along with using adequate sun protection. This prevents spots from recurring.
Are All Spots Melasma?
No. Besides melasma, there are other types of hyperpigmentation, including sun spots on the face, age spots, and spots that result from inflammatory skin conditions like acne. Each type of hyperpigmentation requires appropriate treatment, diagnosed and prescribed by a dermatologist.
